WHY? Because it is in your best interests. Your pension and health benefits are under concerted and highly dedicated attack by forces that are anti-working people, anti-union, greed and other hate driven entities and billionaires including the infamous Koch brothers the Tea Party and other Republican sources. Be not deceived, concerted blaming of retirees and other public employees present and past is not going to stop. There is simply incredible amounts of cash being funded to the media to brainwash the public into believing that retirees and working people are the cause of economic difficulties and the present decline. This is akin to the well established psychological device of blaming the victim. For Chapter 9, your first meeting is free (there is a free lunch after all) and there is a long list of mostly discounted items available and the satisfaction of knowing that you are part of a group helping each other out.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU? At least a modicum of assurance that you are doing your best to preserve your hard earned pension and health care benefits. These were not given to you by your former employer. They were fought out at the bargaining table between labor and management. And, if you do not think that you are "labor" you are seriously delusional.
WHAT DO YOU GET BY NOT JOINING YOUR FELLOW RETIREES? I am not sure but I do know that it is easy to pick off opponents one at a time as opposed to a large group. Politicians listen to numbers. The larger the number of people in front of them the more likely do they listen. Presently our numbers are at an all time low and declining precipitously. As I see it, retired people need to join together in the largest numbers possible to defend themselves and their crucial interests. And, those interests, in my judgment, are the pension and health care benefits that we have worked for and earned. They were not a gift.
A single person cannot hold out and stand firm against such an array of greed, ignorance, and destructive hate driven forces. In a group one has a better chance of surviving if not winning. You ought to be writing local and national policy makers. Sure, this will be read by their hired lackeys but each letter and phone call or email is recorded and a running count kept and handed to the policy maker. Better to fight than surrender.
Joe Pendry, Past President of Chapter 9.
